The system was heavily criticized even in the Medieval times, when a multitude of militaristic and monastic orders based their entire lives around upholding "justice", leading to very questionable legal stances and behaviors. Nowadays, in the age of science and technology, it should have no place in a civilized society.
It is the idea of "justice" that leads to rulings such as "Your ancestors were oppressed 200 years ago, so now you can demand compensation from the oppressors' successors", or "This peasant has kept more vegetables than he deserved, hence the lord should appropriate his farm".
